A bit rusty, after leaving the military 3 years ago

Starting to think about my preparations for mobilizing.... Step One, a re-cap of essential situational knowledge.

"Survival Tip #6

Find some means of alerting rescuers to your whereabouts. If you are lost in a desert, writing a large SOS in the sand with your water is an effective means of drawing attention"

  1. Ah yes... and if you don't have any water then you can always use your sunblock or ... bodily fluids :)

Please don't get lost in the desert!

  2. Then tape up your mouth and pinch your nostrils...

Can't imagine that emptying your water source is the best aid to survival in the desert.

If no other bits and pieces are available to make lettering, I'd just start waving both arms merrily overhead, shemagh in hand, when I heard rotors/jets - should be sufficient to attract the attention of air rescue personnel. Then sip my water. ;)

Try 'contactleft' user on ebay for kit - huge stock and some good prices.

  3. Recommend getting a filter straw to keep with you in a mini emergency kit, and an inline filter for your camelbak. Clean water everywhere.

    Other bits for the kit:

    condom
    wound dressing
    antibiotics
small reel of wire for snares, fishing, tying things, etc - or at least 10 metres off a reel
a few mini fishing hooks on paper, backed by tape so you can press them out
    mini compass
    sun block
    antihistamines
    antiseptic cream
    small mirror
    morse code cheat sheet
utility knife with 3 inch non-serrated blade
    windproof matches
    tinder
    fire striker
    ini maglite

In your large kit, you can add a few other essentials, like cordage, flare sticks, Dom Perignon, cork screw...
